BORDERS & BRIDGES
A ONE-OF-A-KIND COLLABORATION
One festival. One constellation. One concert that can only happen here
Borders & Bridges is not a fixed ensemble. It is a format for the meeting.
THE IDEA
Borders & Bridges brings together musicians with strong individual artistic identities across borders, traditions and generations. Each artist enters the collaboration with music of their own: songs, tunes, stories, instrumental pieces, poems or other material that already carries a distinct voice.
The meeting changes the material. The musicians reinterpret one another's work, create new arrangements and develop new music together. The aim is neither fusion for its own sake nor a temporary supergroup. The artistic point is to preserve what is individual while discovering what becomes possible when those individual languages meet.
The result is a concert with its own dramaturgy and identity: a shared performance built from existing repertoire, new interpretations and material created specifically for that particular constellation.
THE FESTIVAL AS CO-CURATOR
There is no standard touring version of Borders & Bridges. Each host festival helps shape its own edition.
Together we ask: Who should meet? Which local, regional or national voice belongs in the room? Which artistic contrast or affinity would make the encounter meaningful? What can be created here that could not be created anywhere else?
This curatorial partnership gives the festival a genuine artistic role. Rather than receiving a finished production, the festival becomes part of creating a one-off work that reflects its place, its programme and its musical community.
THE ARTISTIC PROCESS
Curating the constellation — M.C. Hansen and the host festival identify the artists whose voices, repertoire and musical backgrounds make the meeting worth pursuing.
Exchanging material — In the months leading up to the festival, the musicians share repertoire, recordings, texts and ideas and begin to identify the pieces that invite transformation.
Creating together — Arrangements, transitions and new material are developed collaboratively, leaving room for improvisation and for the musicians' individual strengths to shape the final form.
Building the performance — Songs, instrumental music, storytelling, poetry and traditional material are woven into one coherent concert. Where appropriate, lighting, scenography or visual elements can support the dramaturgy without overwhelming the music.
The encounter remains alive — The concert is prepared with care, but it should still feel like a meeting rather than a museum piece. Openness, responsiveness and risk are part of the format.
WHAT THE AUDIENCE EXPERIENCES
A Borders & Bridges concert is designed as an encounter the audience can witness and feel. They hear familiar musical identities placed in unfamiliar relationships. They can recognise where a song or tune comes from, while also hearing it change in real time through another musician's imagination.
Because each edition belongs to a specific festival, the audience is not seeing a touring package repeated from one stage to the next. They are present for something made for them, in that place, with that combination of artists.
The ambition is simple: create a concert that only exists because these people met here.
THE FIRST EDITION
The first Borders & Bridges edition premiered at SPOT Festival in Denmark, bringing together:
M.C. Hansen — songwriter and storyteller
Jacob Chano — pianist and multi-instrumentalist
Ditte Fromseier — fiddler and composer
Sigurd Hockings — guitarist and composer
Hazelius/Hedin — Swedish folk musicians Esbjörn Hazelius and Johan Hedin
The premiere established the central principle of the project: strong individual voices do not need to be smoothed into a common style. The energy comes from allowing their differences to remain audible while building a shared artistic language around them.

THE NEXT PHASE
Borders & Bridges is now being developed as a series of festival-specific editions across the Nordic countries and North America. Current conversations include Shetland Folk Festival, Vancouver Folk Music Festival and Trout Forest Music Festival.
The next phase will expand the circle further, with an ambition to bring exceptional musicians from Canada and the United States into dialogue with Nordic artists. Each new edition remains independent: the point is not to reproduce the first concert, but to use the same artistic method to create a new one.
WHAT A HOST FESTIVAL GAINS
A unique artistic production created specifically for the festival.
A meaningful role in the curatorial process.
A framework for bringing local or national artists into genuine international collaboration.
A concert with a clear story for audiences, media and delegates.
A format that can connect established names, emerging voices and different musical traditions without reducing them to a single genre.
The possibility of documenting a creative process as well as the final performance.
PRACTICAL FRAMEWORK
Line-up: Flexible. The constellation is created in dialogue with the host festival.
Repertoire: Existing songs and tunes, new interpretations, newly arranged material and new compositions created for the edition.
Preparation: Remote artistic exchange in the months before the festival, followed by focused rehearsal time on site.
Performance: One coherent concert. Duration and production scale are adapted to the festival context.
Production: Can be presented as a music-led concert or expanded with lighting, scenography and visual elements where the setting calls for it.
Documentation: Video and photographic documentation can form part of the project and help carry each edition into the wider international network.
ARTISTIC DIRECTION
Borders & Bridges is initiated and artistically directed by Danish songwriter and storyteller M.C. Hansen. The project grows out of more than twenty-five years of international touring, songwriting and collaboration, and from a long-standing interest in what happens when songs, stories and musical traditions are allowed to meet without losing their individual character.
For each edition, the artistic direction is developed in close dialogue with the participating musicians and the host festival.
ONE FESTIVAL. ONE CONSTELLATION. ONE CONCERT THAT CAN ONLY HAPPEN HERE.
